It has recently discovered that the Caribbean ocean shore beaches possess a revered status in the bird world. There is one of only three “mega-birdwatch” sites worldwide, where it is possible to observe raptor numbers from 5,000 to 200,000 birds in a day in the Puerto Rico Mountains. The birds, on their way south from the States and Canada are mostly Swainson’s hawks, turkey vultures and broad tailed hawks. But there are many other kinds of hawks, kites and falcons either. And there is the observation tower for specialists and tourists to watch the birds there. It's a beautiful hike through the jungle in the Central America reserve. The migration season continues till the end of November. The Caribbean side of the region presents white-sand beach shores and the English-speaking cultures of Belize, Honduras and Nicaragua - great places for cheap dives with sharks and stingrays. There are also the "surf villages" with their beaches and the breaks near Leon, Nicaragua. Meanwhile, national parks and the untamed jungle the most notably of Panama and Honduras make for untamed adventures. Buses with tourists zip from country to country, but if you hope to make any sense of the region, slow down. It's the Central American way.
The Central Region should show the tourists goldfinches, hummingbirds, magpies or toucans. Taking a branch of the famous Pan American Highway, the tourists can drive through the heart of this region to the border with Honduras. The warmest months for beach staying are March, April and May, Central America's "sea season". The climate in the Atlantic Coast has been classified as having the highest temperature and humidity. The temperature in this region corresponds to that in tropical jungles and ranges above 89° F. The Pacific Lowland area runs from the Gulf of Fonseca, on Nicaragua's Pacific border with Costa Rica south of Lake Nicaragua. From this lowland strip, the Maribios mountain range, with its 25 volcanic cones, towers cover some of the most beautiful and impressive beaches found anywhere else in Central America. This region is the most populated and visited by tourists. About 27 percent of the nation's entire population lives in and around Managua, the capital city, on the southern shores of Lake Managua. Few Latin American capital cities share Managua's picturesque location. Being on an open plain, it does not suffer the pollution of other capitals trapped in mountain valleys.
